Putrajaya is located 25km south of Kuala
Lumpur and serves as the federal
administrative centre of Malaysia. The seat
of government was moved here in 1999
from Kuala Lumpur due to overcrowding
and congestion. Kuala Lumpur remains
Malaysia’s national capital, being the seat
of the King and Parliament, as well as the
country’s commercial and financial centre.
The main government buildings including
the Prime Minister’s office are located in
Putrajaya. From this centre, the Federal
Government administrates the affairs of
the nation. The Federal Government is
led by the Prime Minister and his cabinet
and is responsible for defence, the police,
and the railways, labour, broadcasting,
post and finance, health, national security,
education and more. Putrajaya’s population
is overwhelmingly Muslim with the majority
employed in the civil service.
