Day 36: United Families

But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially his family, he has denied the faith and is worse than an infidel. (1 Timothy 5:8)
In just one generation, family composition and dynamics have changed tremendously. The contributions by members of the extended family are very rare today. With the focus on the nuclear-family a wealth of experiences and learning opportunities for children is lost. In the past, grandparents were an important resource for the learning experiences of the young. They were trusted, experienced and wise adults who were effective complements in the parenting task. Unfortunately their function has been increasingly sidelined. There is a need to recapture the important contribution the elderly can make to the younger generation by embracing contributions from the extended family. Instead of being allowed to grow old alone or in special homes, the possibility of including the elderly in the family home needs serious consideration. It may well be a symbiotic relationship.

Prayer Points:

  • Christians to personally care and provide for their elderly parents
  • Christians to resolve or manage any conflict they have with their elderly parents
  • Christians to encourage bonding between grandparents and grandchildren
  • Christians to teach their children to respect their elderly grandparents.

Prayer Shield: for our elders, pastors and leaders
Leaders’ character: Generosity
