The Malaysian Parliament comprises the
Senate (Dewan Negara) and the House
of Representatives (Dewan Rakyat). It is
the Federal legislative authority empowered
to make laws, raise taxes and authorise
expenditure headed by the Yang di-Pertuan
Agong. The Senators, whether appointed
or elected, serve a six-year term, while
members of the House of Representative or
Members of Parliament are elected for a fiveyear
term in a single member constituency
system. Presently, there are 70 Senators
and 222 Elected Representatives. Since
gaining independence from Britain on 31
August 1957, elections to the House of
Representatives have been held regularly
every five years or less.
